Here are our favourite digital stats from research and studies published this month.

1) Smart speakers to be fastest growing connected device in 2019:
Deloitte recently announced their UK technology, media and telecoms trends for 2019, predicting that smart speakers will be the fastest-growing connected device this year with estimated growth of 63% year-on-year reaching £5.6bn revenue worldwide. Smart speakers are expected to be the seventh most-used consumer device this year.

2) Global radio consumption continues to rise despite new media:
Recent research compiled by Deloitte has shown that global radio forecasts continue to rise with 47 million UK users listening to the radio at least once a week. The UK is the fifth largest market for annual radio revenues worth £1.3bn.
The report suggests that radio’s reach and effectiveness is often underestimated, however the 99-year-old media remains popular with no sign of waning.

3) Amazon named UK consumers’ favourite retailer:
According to recent research compiled by the Direct Marketing Association, Amazon has been voted the UK ’s favourite retailer above other popular contenders such as Marks & Spencers, John Lewis and Sainsbury's. The DMA surveyed the popularity of brands across sectors with Amazon being the only brand to feature within the top 5 across all sectors surveyed; retail, technology and entertainment.    

4) December sees lowest monthly growth for UK online retailers:
The latest Capgemini Sales Index figures show that UK online sales had a lower than expected growth in December 2018 of only 3.6% year-on-year - this is the lowest growth for any recorded month since the index began.

5) Birmingham named the best UK city for digital outside London:
Research by monster.com has discovered that in regards to the digital industry Birmingham is the best place to locate in regards to average salary, living costs and supply of jobs in the digital sector. Birmingham has a 33% year-on-year growth of digital jobs.
